| Music | CHICHA LIBRE: CANIBALISMO RECORD RELEASE PARTY |
|
| DJs! Special Guests! Live Video Art! Canibalismo! Chicha Libre is a Brooklyn collective made up of French, American, Venezuelan and Mexican musicians who play a mixture of Latin rhythms and psychedelia. Chicha refers to Peru’s particular brand of electric cumbia first made popular in the late ‘60s in Lima and the Amazon. While loosely inspired by Colombian cumbia, chicha incorporated Peruvian melodies, psychedelic effects, some Cuban son and everything in between--an oddly post-modern combination that was close in spirit to the Congolese rumba of Franco or the pop syncretism of Os Mutantes. While Chicha Libre's new album, Canibalismo (out May 8, Barbès in the US and Crammed Disc worldwide) is inspired by inspired by the Peruvian Chicha explosion of the 70s, it also looks back to the Cultural Cannibalism dear to the Brazilian tropicalists and the production values of late 1960’s rock bands. The group still pays homage to the likes of Ranil and Los Mirlos, but mixes it up even more by combining mellotron and other vintage synths with African guitars, treated percussion, fuzztone and some R.D Burmans inspired arrangements. |

Wednesday–Sunday, 1–5 pm
Fridays, 6–8:45 pm
Kimball Education Gallery/Artist Studio
The San Francisco Unified School District and the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco proudly unveil the 2012 Young at Art festival: an 8 day celebration of student creativity in visual, literary, media and performing arts. For the past 26 years this unique San Francisco event has been a point of destination for families, teachers, artists and community members from San Francisco and beyond. The promise of equity and access in arts education for all students K–12 during the curricular day, made real by the SFUSD's groundbreaking Arts Education Master Plan, finds its point of destination in Young at Art, where all who attend may see for themselves the inspiration and creativity inherent in all of our youngest San Franciscans. Many pieces of artwork in the lobby of this year's festival will be centered around the 75th Anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge theme. | Bay Area Black Comedy Competition & Festival 2012
Hosted by Don "DC" Curry & Featuring Over 60 of the Funniest Stand-up Comedians From All Across the Country
http://www.BlackComedyCompetition.com
The Bay Area Black Comedy Competition (BABCCF) was initially created in 1986 by theatre artist, poet and aspiring comedian Tony Spires, as a means of leveling the playing field for African American and other minority Bay Area stand-up comedians. From its humble roots, it has evolved into the largest, longest-running, live showcase of urban comedians in the world. The BABCCF has also become a major networking convention and a national proving ground for talented up and coming stand-ups of all races and ethnic backgrounds.
Since 2002 the BABCCF has produced one of the country's leading entertainment industry educational festivals, with daytime symposiums, industry panels, workshops and one-on-one professional consultations, all specifically designed to develop the next generation of stand-up comedians. |

| ZORBÁ (1968) |
|
| Which will be directed by Greg MacKellan. Based on the book Zorbá the Greek by Nikos Kazantzakis, this rich, uncompromising musical is a salute to the spirit of Greece, where Zorba celebrates life – the sound of the bouzouki, the taste of an olive, the scent of a woman – but also lost love, heartbreak and death. Great songs include “Life Is,” “The Butterfly,” “Only Love,” “Why Can’t I Speak,” and “I Am Free.”
